Shari Jung was excited to get her new iPhone 5 from a Verizon store in Jasper on Friday.
And, unlike hundreds of others across the world, she didn't have to wait very long to get it.
'It was really easy. I was surprised there wasn't a long line,' the Jasper woman said this morning, talking on her new phone. 'I was there at 8 a.m. and there were two people in front of me. When I left, there were three people behind me.'
That was not the scene in many of the Apple stores and cellphone dealers in the United States and other countries Friday. Eager buyers formed long lines in Asia, Europe and North America to be the first to get their hands on the latest version of the smartphone.
Apple today announced that more than 5 million iPhones have been sold since the phone was launched Friday.
AT&T stores in Dubois County sold out of the new models over the weekend and now have waiting lists, according to several people who tried to get phones. Because of an AT&T policy, workers at the stores that sell AT&T's services cannot speak publicly about the stores' business.
Some Verizon stores and carriers of the Verizon model, like Radio Shack, have the smartphones available. But Radio Shack workers said the AT&T model it carries is sold out.
Apple has models of the phone for specific carriers: AT&T, Sprint and Verizon Wireless. A specific model of the phone generally is locked and available for only that carrier's service.
Jung had decided to switch from AT&T to Verizon, which is why she was at the store Friday. 'Normally, I would have ordered it online,' she said. 'But because I was changing, I decided to go to the store. I wanted to be hands-on.'
On Friday, several hundred people lined up outside Apple's 5th Avenue store in New York. In London, some shoppers had camped out for a week in a queue that snaked around the block. In Hong Kong, the first customers were greeted by staff cheering, clapping, chanting 'IPhone 5! IPhone 5!' and high-fiving them as they were escorted individually through the front door.
In a sign of the intense demand, police in Osaka, Japan, were investigating the theft of nearly 200 iPhones 5s, including 116 from one shop alone. In London, police sought help finding a man wanted in connection with the theft of 252 iPhone 5s from a shop in Wimbledon early Friday morning.
The smartphone went on sale in the U.S. and Canada hours after its launch in Australia, Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Britain, France and Germany. It will launch in 22 more countries this week.
Many who ordered online are now waiting for to receive their phones. The demand for iPhone 5 exceeded the initial supply, Apple officials said, and while the majority of pre-orders have been shipped to customers, many are scheduled to be shipped in October.
'Demand for iPhone 5 has been incredible and we are working hard to get an iPhone 5 into the hands of every customer who wants one as quickly as possible,' Tim Cook, Apple's CEO, said in a press release today. 'While we have sold out of our initial supply, stores continue to receive iPhone 5 shipments regularly and customers can continue to order online and receive an estimated delivery date.'
Jung said that even if she did have to wait for the phone, she would have. She is enjoying the panoramic camera as well as the extra screen space that allows a fifth row of apps — the icons that, when pressed, open up a program on the phone — to be displayed.
'I'm very happy with the phone,' she said. 'I love my iPhone.'
